Portable Survey Instruments
Instrument Selection Guide
The Radiation Control Office (RCO) recommends three different types of portable radiation survey meters. Some meters come with multiple options and numerous probes.
Ludlum box model 3 with a cpm face is recommended for most applications. The box can be fitted with different probes depending on the radiation being used.
A Ludlum model3 with a pancake probe is appropriate for radionuclides such as:
Phosphorus-32
Cobalt-57
Iodine-131
A low energy gamma probe can be ordered with the Ludlum model 3 meter for use with:
Iodine-125
Arsnic-73
Under special circumstances an ion chamber is used to measure dose rate. If this is required contact the RCO.
